4 MARCH MONDAY - Gardens by the Bay (Afternoon visit)

This is how the Gardens are billed on their own website:

A national garden and premier horticultural attraction for local and international visitors, Gardens by the Bay is a showpiece of horticulture and garden artistry that presents the plant kingdom in a whole new way, entertaining while educating visitors with plants seldom seen in this part of the world, ranging from species in cool, temperate climates to tropical forests and
habitats.

Initially I'd planned that we'd spend the afternoon and evening at the Gardens as there is so much to do and see and the place differs in daylight and nightlight.

However, tonight we are going to meet with a couple I knew here in the 1990s (Lyn and Glenn).   Glenn works for the same Company I used to work for.  They're Australian and have been living here in Singapore where they brought up their family (the kids were babies/toddlers when I knew them, now one has just qualified as a Vet and the others are doing well and living in Australia).   I haven't seen Lyn and Glenn for 24 years so looking forward to tonight.

So we spent a few hours today looking around the 'Gardens by the Bay' in daylight and will return tomorrow evening to see the light show.

Being the first Monday in the month, some of the domes/display areas were closed for regular refurbishment (including the Cloud Forest which I'd have liked to have seen) but there was still plenty to do.    The dome we spent most time in was the Flower Dome - mainly because the air was chilled and very refreshing after walking around in 35 degrees outside.   As you'd expect in Singapore, everything was beautifully landscaped/themed.

View from the entrance (when arriving at Bayfront MRT station)

The Marina Bay Sands Hotel dominates the skyline

Supertrees and domes

The nearby Singapore Flyer

Supertree Grove ... we're looking forward to seeing these lit up in tomorrow night's show

The OCBC Skyway - walkway between two of the Supertrees.   Entrance to the Supertrees grove is free but you pay S$8 to use the walkway (about £4.50).   When we were there a coachload of people turned up and the queue was horrendous.  There was no shade for those queuing so we opted not to buy tickets.

There are lots of carvings and statues in the park grounds and in the flower dome areas

Giant dragonfly

and ants

In the flower dome one section had an Aloes in Wonderland theme with statues of the hare and Alice etc., I liked the Cheshire Cat!

and I also liked these figures which looked as though they were made from wood/driftwood although that could have been faked of course

And these are very cleverly done ... Look closely!

I found this one quite disturbing ....

This is the 'Artist's Statement' .... or 'arty bo**ox' as we say in the trade

The flower dome had some spectacular displays.   I took far too many photos, but it was lovely and cool there so any excuse to prolong our stay.    Here's a random selection of pics

Back outside we saw lots of these 'mini pineapple' plants ... I don't know if they're edible

and a few more scenes as we made our way to the exit

  1. We loved the Gardens by the Bay and I see there is still a lot of the artwork we saw, however the giant baby is new I think.
